Be prepared! Bad things happen everywhere! Increase your survivability and buy a little peace of mind for your family! I have received a number of questions from friends, family, Twitter and FaceBook on this topic. I hope this helps you.

I found this video (below) and it seemed pretty common sense to me. We have, as a family, chosen to have an extensive emergency plan.

Bare in mind, we have been preparing for about 18 years. We still are! If you are in an area where you can have a camp trailer, it's a great place to keep ready to go if you can. Dry goods, clothing and other needed items can readily be stored and within a few minutes you can grab your other storage, hook up and be on the road.

I am really an "ounce of prevention, pound of cure" kind of guy. I tend to go a little over board, just ask my wife. Two years ago I was laid off and have found little work since. Thank God, and I mean thank God, we had our reserves! Another tip, save money! We were very prepared, and I would have never guessed that I would not find real work in 2 years. Our savings has been a great blessing.

Also, I believe that when you build a life raft, you build it to try to help others as well.

If you buy things you eat and keep everything rotated it helps. Some products do not have dates, in that event we use a marker and put the date we purchased the item on the item. "Don't panic" (favorite quote from Hitchhikers Guide) build storage a little at a time. Do what you can, when you can, but I do suggest a little urgency at this point!

Here's a short list of suggested items to store. Your needs may be different, but we have chosen to store:

Food (dry goods, canned, frozen, and long term dehydrated)
Flour, Sugar, Salt, lots of seasonings (squirrel tastes better with garlic pepper)
Hard candy, comfort food, coffee, chocolate (happy kids and trade value)
Board games, card games, color books, etc.
Water, high volume quality water filter
Ammunition, fishing and hunting gear
Fuel (propane and gas)
Generators (yes, we have two)
24 hour kit
1 year of all medications that can be stored
Emergency and first aid kits
Blankets, bedding, sleeping bags, etc.
Soap, detergent, bathroom supplies, bleach
"Don't forget your towel" (another quote from Hitchhiker's Guide)
Clothes (warm and cold weather) shoes, boots
Small air compressor, tools, radio, portable TV, drill-pump
Flashlights, propane lanterns, propane stove, candles, matches, lighters
Batteries (rechargeable are great if you can)
Clean water hose, extension cords, hand truck
Extra cash on hand (if power is down, try getting cash from an ATM)
